Mid-February

Hello again! How are you doing? Have you managed to keep the winter blues away so far? February is probably the worst month for the blues for me and I've noticed that this year has been no exception. The last few weeks I've been struggling with motivation and feeling down, as I'm sure many others have too. We've finally seen some sun the last few days and that's definitely helped!

So... it's time to update you on my progress. The surprising thing for me is that there's been any progress at all with how I've been feeling lately, which is nice! I've been continuing my daily meditations as much as I can and I've added 30 min of cycling (indoors) every other day - time to think about shedding that extra winter weight! There hasn't been as much creative work as I would've liked, or that I even scheduled for, but there has been some movement.

I've also been thinking that while I have all this theoretical education concerning how to use programs like Photoshop and Illustrator, and how to use colour effectively, and how to combine fonts, I don't have a lot of practical experience. So in an effort to correct this, I started researching various tutorials on Illustrator and creating characters and shapes in vector. There are a lot of really good sites out there. I even managed to finish one and I have another planned for this week too!

Let's take a look at my work this past few weeks:

I started a new negative painting in water-colour. It's the same subject as my last one, with orange berries, but I made a colour change by swapping out the violet in the previous painting with phthalo blue. I'm trying to get a feeling of light in this one.

Here you get a better sense of the texture I added with alcohol and water drops when the paint was still wet in the first step. I've started cutting shapes into the piece.

Lots of shape work here. The leaves are coming along nicely I think, but I don't like the group of berries on the bottom-right corner, they look very forced. I'd also like to see more variation in terms of contrast in the whole piece.

The finished piece. I lightened up the edges of the bottom-right corner bunch of berries to send it to the back and be less prominent. I've also added more darks and lifted a few lights for better contrast and did a bit of positive painting to improve the colour of the fruit. I admit that I was very worried that this experiment would turn out anything I liked at several points in the process, and while I'm not sure I completely achieved what I set out to do, I'm still happy with how it turned out!

In the midst of all this painting, I got a card from my sister in the mail and for the first time ever, got the urge to doodle a sort of mandala-type drawing. I only did the flap because I thought that would be more interesting, plus I had to go do other things so couldn't work on it more. I like how "spring" it is!

I found a really sweet tutorial for this little fox done in Illustrator and I just had to try it out! The only trouble I had was with the background texture - I couldn't get the opacity to work the way the tutorial said, no matter what I tried. Still, he's awfully cute isn't he?!

It is a beginner project and works well with the lower versions of CS. My next tutorial is on creating vector characters with swappable features. I'm really looking forward to it! I'm a bit stumped for my next painting, so I did a bunch of google searches to see what people have done with negative painting. I created a new board in Pinterest with a bunch of inspiration! November 01-15, 2016: Natural History Illustration

Hello my friend, and how did your first half of November go? Did Hallowe'en treat you well, or was it a non-issue for you? Ours went well. As many other parents I spoke with also said, we didn't get as many trick-or-treaters as we expected, but that didn't stop my girls from collecting a great haul!

You might have noticed that there was no post last week, this was intentional. With my new job and other priorities, by the end of the week I found that there really wasn't much to report in my creative endeavours so I've decided to move to a bi-monthly schedule instead of a weekly one. In doing this my hope is that I will keep slightly more time on my side to keep the momentum going without burning out, and you will keep getting updates on my progress!

So...the last two weeks have been just crazy! Someone in one of my Facebook groups drew attention to a new online course for natural history illustration, being offered by a University in Australia. If you know nothing else about me, you should know that I've always wanted to learn more about drawing nature in a realistic manner. In many ways I've managed to learn how to do this, but it's all been informal, whatever I can get my hands on. This would be a chance to learn from actual Illustrators and get some tips and tricks that might make what I do faster and/or easier. And as a bonus, I could audit the course for free!! I'm sure you can guess what I decided to do.

The course is titled "Drawing Nature, Science and Culture: Natural History Illustration"(click on the title to go to the webpage) and is being offered by the University of Newcastle Australia. I am currently working in week 3 I believe (or it could be week 4 since week 1 was fairly low-key) and I've done a few drawings for the homework assignments.

The first assignment was to do some practicing with tone by using 4 or 5 different pencils. I chose to attempt this piece of bark that my girls collected from one of their nature walks recently.

For week 2, we were taught how to measure and better understand what's involved in nature illustration. This shell is leading up to a larger project. Notes are very important for natural illustrations.

My first attempt at drawing a sand dollar from my own collection helped me to see what troubles I might encounter for the larger assignment.

For Remembrance Day this year I was inspired to make a little something. I'm almost always late for things like this but since week 3 of my course didn't have homework per se, I decided to do a little painting and lettering to honour our vets and those that continue to serve. And that's about it for this post. As I mentioned there was no homework in the course this week so I've been spending the time trying to catch up on my other priorities and improve my stamina so I can continue working this week.

Week of October 24, 2016: Final Galaxy paintings and a Clipart product!

Hello my friend, and Happy Hallowe'en!!

This past week has been just nuts for me and mine, what with preparing for Hallowe'en, finishing my galaxy series paintings, and my new job! But we made it to the other side without too many casualties so I call that a win. I have a few accomplishments to show you from this week, I made up 3 more galaxy paintings in the Fall/Hallowe'en theme, and I finished setting up my first clipart product and it is now available in my Etsy store!!

Galaxy Paintings:

I finished three more galaxy/nebula paintings which completes the series I think. For each one I tried to push myself and the image just a little more to see where this style could go. Quite a number of the six images received more attention than I expected, the maple leaf especially, so I might have to see about getting them up as products on Etsy. In fact I've already got a buyer for three of the originals (Yay!!)!

A galaxy bat. I really liked the idea of a night creature encompassing the night sky in its body. So cool.

A galaxy maple leaf. This goes more along with the fall theme and I wanted to give this image a more 3D element by adding a shadow. The galaxy/nebula also has a few extra elements. This was a very popular image in my Facebook group!

A galaxy crow. I tried to make this a scary looking crow but that's a bit difficult when you're working in silhouette, and the galaxy/nebula I chose is much larger than previous ones, with a lot more colour. There's so much more going on in this image than in the previous ones.

Coming Up:

This week I have a new challenge: I signed up for a 6 week online course through Newcastle University in Australia titled "Drawing Nature, Science and Culture: Natural History Illustration 101" and it starts this week. I'm very excited to take this course as it will be my first introduction to science illustration. I've done plenty of scientific drawings in my Biology courses but they were for lab purposes, I'm curious to see how different these will be from my experience. And of course I will be sharing what I do with you here and through my social media channels.

Week of October 03: Map making, Wild Turkeys, and Abstract Butterflies

Hello! How've you been? Has the week been good to you and yours? For me, this past week has had it's share of ups and downs, nothing too critical, but still... Here in Canada we are celebrating Thanksgiving so there had to be some time spent planning the meal and deciding how we were going to spend our time. This year we had a small celebration planned, with only myself, my hubby and our two girls in attendance - a very intimate gathering! The weather has been a little hectic this week with warmer than normal temperatures. I'm not sure if it was the change in the weather, or some other factor that resulted in my two separate migraines this past week and completely destroying any chance of productive work. Luckily I am not generally prone to migraines, I only seem to get them a few times a year, but they still tend to be a wrench in the gears of my productive day.

I did manage to get a few things moving along. I worked some more on my map, sketched and painting a wild turkey, and started a textural/abstracted butterfly painting!

My Map for MATS B:

Oh this map! I posted what I had completed last week onto a MATS group on Facebook for feedback and got some really good suggestions for improving it. Take a look at it now!

My latest version of the Kitchener-Waterloo map for MATS B. It's coming along!

I think it's coming along nicely. What I want to work on now is some more textural elements in the background and the lettering. Someone suggested that I print out some fonts that I think might work and handletter those to keep the style I've got going on. I found a few tutorials for lettering with text styles that I'd like to try out, they are both from ChrystalElizabeth, one discussing 5 Tips for Brush Lettering, and the other talks abut Three Different Brush Lettering Styles (click the titles to see the posts).

I am not as happy with my progress on this map as I'd like to be. Being ill for two days, plus the extra I needed to put into my family life, put a distinct crimp in my progress. I am very determined to have this completed this week because I have plans for next week that don't involve MATS at all!! I do have one more assignment to finish the course, but I might start that in November.

Wild Turkey Sketch:

We live very near a small forested trail and recently the city put money into naturalizing some of the channel that runs through it. This past year, we've noticed a definite increase in wildlife and wild plants in the area, one of which is a wild turkey that's been seen roaming the neighbourhood. I managed to grab a picture of it on my phone after taking the girls to school one morning and was very excited to sketch and paint it in my sketchbook!

It was so much fun to draw and paint! I don't get to sketch many birds and I'd like to do them more often. Hopefully this will be the first of many!!

Watercolour Texture:

Through my Facebook account I frequently get posts from other artist groups or companies, many of whom have free tutorials or information on how to improve your skills. One that I frequently look at is Artists and Illustrators magazine (link goes to their Facebook page), based in the UK. This past week they had a tutorial that inspired me to follow along, it was their Daily Art Challenge: watercolour texture.

I was in the mood to do something fun and creative and at the time I hadn't had my migraines yet so I knew I had plenty of time to play. This is about as far as I got. I didn't have the recommended japanese tissue paper so I just used what I had available. I don't believe this will take too much more time to complete, but we'll have to wait and see what I have to spare this week. Unfortunately it isn't high on my to-do list and I have to prioritize my time for more critical projects.

Ah the end of another week! I am looking forward to a more productive week and an end to certain projects! It's going to be much cooler here, definitely fall weather, so it's the perfect time to be indoors and working creatively!

Week of September 26, 2016

Hello my friend, I am happy to see that you made it through another week! It is officially October - where did September go? I don't know about you but I think I could've used at least a few more days before the month ended. This last week of September was more difficult for me than usual. I spent a lot of time struggling with fears and anxiety, a common issue among creatives, or so I've been told. I touched up my logo, was asked to make a logo for another small business, worked on some sketching, and made a huge dent in my map for MATS B! I also did some work enlarging my creative community and learning to grow my business.

I'd been looking at my logo lately and I realized that I couldn't handle how poorly the image looked from a distance. Even up close the lettering was difficult to read and the pattern of the wreaths were overly distracting. I still adored the colouring and the watercolour background effect, but I needed to make the wreaths fall into the background more and find a way to darken up the letters and make them more visible. Here's the result:

I think this works so much better! Shortly after I posted this on my Facebook page, I got a request from a small business owner to put together her logo too. She makes small (and sometimes large) crocheted dolls and figures and sells them. She already had an avatar that she wanted to stand front and centre, and she wanted her business name in a circle around it in beautiful lettering. This is what I made for her:

I created the entire thing in Illustrator. She had given me the image of the girl, but I had to draw it out to vectorize and colour it. She also requested that I make an effort to seasonalize it with a Santa hat and bunny ears so that's my next job. So much fun!!

Sketching:

It was a frustrating week for me. Fear and anxiety kept nagging at me and draining my creative energies so I made an effort to keep things fun and light by doing a little sketching to take my mind off things.

Cute little forest creatures. I had an idea for an illustration that I may still go forward with but I needed some critters first.

I do love to sketch and it frequently takes a backseat with my eagerness to move to the finished piece. Exploring ideas and training the hand and brain are really a lot of fun and frequently quite relaxing, but there's also the guilt of doing something I enjoy instead of something more serious (another typical creative personality trait).

MATS B Map:

With all of the frustration of the week I am quite proud of myself for moving forward with my map! I had a long talk with myself and came to the realization that fear was what was stopping me from moving forward. I've always loved looking at illustrated maps and have been very impressed at what others in my class have been creating, and I had a fear of screwing it up. This was also well outside my comfort zone! I tend to like to illustrate real things, things I can see and touch, in a realistic way. While you can do a map that way, that wasn't what the brief wanted. It specifically said that the map was not to be exact or precise, but a representation of the feel of the location. To me, this meant a much looser style and I struggled with trying to understand how to get my little corner of the world onto paper in this way. 

After my long talk I decided to go ahead with some quick pen sketches of ideas I had had months ago and just see how it went together. This was going to be my first digital piece (because for the life of me I couldn't get it going traditionally). Here's where I left it last week:

There's still a fair bit of work to do on it, but I was impressed with how it's looking so far. Enough to keep me working on it this week and get it done!!

Fear and Business Growth:

I've been steadily growing my creative community for the past several weeks by joining several  Facebook groups and following a few more creative business newsletters. At first this was an awesome source of information and support for me, but it didn't take long to be overwhelming. It's wonderful to see all these amazing people and their incredible artwork, and to realize that there are people out there that can help you fulfill your dream of a creative business and creative life, to answer your questions and to help guide you where you want to go. But in a short time I found myself having to quickly skim through images as opposed to reading them thoroughly and commenting to support others. I was finding myself comparing my skill level to others and not measuring up. It can be very difficult, especially at my stage of juggling family priorities with a dream that was late in coming, to not get lost in the ocean of options and lose sight of what I want to do and where I want to go.

So, this week I am going back to limiting my time online (especially Facebook), I still want to be giving support to others and contribute to my community but I will be more selective about how I do that. I am returning to my use of a daily schedule to help me juggle my competing priorities, and I will write out my goal so I can stay on track. I also need to keep in mind how much I've accomplished in the last year. There's always this pressure to be further ahead, to be successful and skilled now regardless of how new you are to the business and I need to remember that I am moving forward every day, that each thing I do is another step up the mountain to achieve my dream.

Week of September 19, 2016 & My Experience with MyMATSPrep (Children's Book Illustration)

Hi again! I can't believe September is almost over already! Summer is done (boo!) and Fall has arrived (yay!). There's a lot about Fall that I enjoy, particularly cuddling up under a warm blanket with a good book and a hot tea :)

Work this past week was a little side-tracked. Lilla Rogers from MakeArtThatSells.com has been promoting her newest class for Children's Book Illustration and this week was offering 5 days of free Matsprep assignments. I think you know me well enough by now to realize that I couldn't possibly turn this down, so I signed up, took a deep breath, tried to let everything go, and let myself go to do my best. I did manage to find some time to work on improving my negative painting skills with a tulip exercise, plus, I followed a design tutorial from Designcuts.com and also created a kids party invitation in Illustrator!

MyMATSPrep:

These assignments are always a challenge and I couldn't wait to dig in! Check it out :)

Day 1: Lilla showed us an old photograph of a young girl she named Minette and asked us to make a character around her. The first page is a study of a style that I would like to adopt, the second is my Minette and who I think she is :)

Day 2: We were asked to look out of our bedroom window and draw what we saw. My bedroom faces the backyard. I think I managed to capture it pretty well :)

Day 3: Because it's a children's book we were asked to redraw our window image but this time flip what we saw, make small things big/big things small, take into account a child's imagination and sense of play.

Day 4: Time to introduce perspective and a sense of distance to the scene.

Day 5: Take our final scene and include little Minette in whatever manner you would expect her to be in it.

I really had a blast making this final image! It was so much fun to put together something that I had thought about for a long time. Because I have two girls, I've often imagined what the yard could look like to a young mind! Plus, I had the chance to draw in a way I've always wanted to, and research and develop a character!


Negative Painting:

I have a passion for negative painting. I love looking at what artist's have created and the complexity of the image is completely different than when you strictly paint in the positive! I've been wanting to practice this style for quite some time now. Several months ago I snagged myself a copy of Roland Roycraft's book "Fill Your Watercolors with Light and Color". I adored looking through the book and was so pleased that it had exercises I could follow, one of which was this beautiful tulips painting:

Children's Party Invitation:

I adore lettering and typography, almost as much as painting, and I never seem to get enough chances to play with them. So when I saw that Designcuts had a tutorial on creating a cute little children's party invitation (with a few freebie graphics!), I knew I had to take the time to try it out! It also gave me the opportunity to flex my Adobe Illustrator muscles. I found a nice card mockup to customize and display it in too :)

So that was my week. It was pretty exhilarating actually! Almost everything I did seemed to be on point, even though none of it was following my intention for the week. I haven't completely figured this week out yet. October is a very busy month at the Wiklund house what with Thanksgiving, Hallowe'en, and a birthday, but I'm sure that's true at your house as well.

My Experience with MATS B: Scrapbook page

Hi! So how was last week for you? Was it as hot where you are as it was here? It was so hot, thankfully we have air conditioning otherwise I wouldn't have gotten anything done! These past few days we got quite a bit of rain as well, which is good because it was sorely needed. My husband and I also celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary this weekend! It always amazes me how much time can go by and still feel like only a few days or even years. I am very lucky to have him in my life, he's very supportive of what I do and where I'm trying to go, and he's incredible with the girls!

In work news, I finally completed my scrapbook page for MATS B!! I can't tell you how thrilled I am to have this finished! And not just because it's done, I am also very proud of how it turned out. I think it's my best work for the course to date :)

The assignment was to create a scrapbook page of elements in a 12x12 format for a cruise theme. Since Lilla prefers to go the vintage look (and really, who can argue with that? I LOVE vintage) and I enjoy sea life, I decided to combine the two. I also really wanted to include some cute characters and gave my marine creatures some personality and cute faces. I think I managed to stay out of the childish/baby look with a more sophisticated palette of colours, but I do see that it's obviously meant to attract more women than men. I also managed to include some of the lettering that I've been working on this week, since it followed the theme I was working on, and I think the typography matches the feel of the icons and finished piece very nicely.

What was amusing to me was that when I finally got to sit and start putting the elements together, it seemed like it took no time at all. The final piece almost seemed to make itself. That was a very nice feeling too! When you make the elements separately like I did, it can be difficult to know what the final will look like and there's a fear that all your hard work just won't mesh and you'll have to start over, so it going together so smoothly was amazing!

I'm planning on offering it as a downloadable digital scrapbook page on my Etsy shop, what do you think? Is this something you'd use? Since it will be a .png file you could also use the elements to make up cards and whatnot.

Well, that's about it for this week. The girls are enjoying their last week of day camp for the summer so I'm hoping to put some good effort in before it's done. I am going to be taking some time away from my family later in the week to visit family north of here for a few days. It will be nice to get away from being a mom for a little while and recharge the batteries so-to-speak.

Second week of August

Hello, hello! How is August treating you so far? The last few days here have been very nice, not too hot during the day and just a touch of chill at night. I have a few things to report to you this week, an updated logo and website, my second published illustration, and I applied for a job!!

New Logo!

I've been wanting to make my own logo for some time now. I finally have the skills, the only thing holding me back was all the options available to me. And I've noticed that when it comes to my own projects, deadlines are flexible. I've discovered that a flexible deadline does not make for a very creative output. It turns out, for me at least, that a deadline helps to narrow down the options taking it from "oh, wouldn't it be amazing if I did that?!" to "yes, that would be awesome, but it would take more time than I have, and I'm not 100% sure how to do it right now, so instead let's do this which is also awesome and something I know I can do!". Okay, I realize the second sentence is what I should be thinking anyway but somehow it doesn't work that way, at least not at this stage in my development. I'm hoping that with more hard deadlines I will create a habit of thinking and then meet my own deadlines in the same way.

So what finally prompted me to create a logo? I decided to look for work and I felt that my social media would look more professional with a cohesive look and consistent logo. I also wanted to showcase my skills a little more. If you've been keeping up with me on Facebook or Instagram you will have already seen it, albeit in a small format, so here it is:

I really like how it turned out. I love the colours, the watercolour effect background, the illustrated wreath pattern and the hand lettered feel of the text. The only negative I have about it is that it's not the easiest read. Because the background is mid-tone light, it's actually quite difficult to make the lettering stand out without being harsh. I'm happy with this first attempt for now. I'm sure I will come up with a redesign in the future, but for now this works for me.

You might recall from a previous post (which you can read here) that I was working on an illustration for MAEZA magazines 13th issue. Well that issue is finally out and you can see my work, and the work of many other amazingly talented artists, in all its published glory here. Also, here's the final piece - I'm considering offering it as a print on my Etsy shop, what do you think of that?

That's it for this week! The girls are home with me this week so work will take a bit of a backseat again. I did manage to get all my icons cut out for my scrapbooking assignment for MATS B, so I'd really like to push through and get that done this week (is this deja vu? I swear I've heard this before!). I also want to get back into my hand lettering practice, I really do miss it.

Hello! Can you believe it's August already? I feel like I've been keeping up momentum and moving forward, so I'm not too upset with how quickly the summer is moving so far. I had a bit of a hiccup this week as far as working was concerned as I came down with a terrible cough. I've gotta say that drawing/painting while coughing is not my recommended way of working so I more-or-less spent the week recovering and spending the little energy I had with my girls.

For the rest of this week's post I thought I'd include some eye-candy, just a few more examples of drawings/paintings that I've done in the past six months or so. 

I've always been fascinated by bonsai trees. I tried to grow one myself once, with disastrous results. I think this one in ink will do better.

I am a Foody at heart and I love to cook and bake so drawing food and foodstuffs feels natural to me. This slice of lasagna was done in coloured pencil.

I do enjoy painting natural things like flowers. This purple iris was done in watercolour.

Today is a stat holiday so everyone's home enjoying a nice break and each other's company. The girls are at camp for the rest of the week, and I'm feeling a lot better (with a very minor lingering cough), so I'm planning on tackling some more of my to do list for MATS.

Third week of July

Hello and welcome! How's your summer going so far? The weather here continues to be hot and muggy, but I managed to keep my spirits up and worked on some elements that I'm really proud of. This week was spent working on my creative contribution to MAEZA magazine's upcoming 13th issue. This will by my second time appearing in this artist magazine and I'm very excited! Oh, and I have big news - I've opened a shop with Society 6 (click here to see it) to feature my work as prints and on products like mugs, iPhone cases, pillows, and even towels! I'm looking forward to adding more but for now I've got a few reasonably priced products featuring my Purple illustration seen in MAEZA's 11th issue (which you can see here).

Here's a preview of some of the elements that I worked on this week. I will let you know when issue 13 has been released, but for now I hope you enjoy this little taste :)

This week my girls are home so my work will be limited. I've decided to take a little break from the drawing/painting side and work a little on the digital side. I'd like to put together my scrapbooking assignment for MATS B, as well as a few more designs for Society 6. I'm also considering some printable options for Etsy, but that may be more than I can handle in one week with two very energetic children :)

My Experience with MATS B: Baby/Children's Apparel

Hello again! How was your week? Mine was busy and exciting, prompting this week to also be busy and exciting! I know that the title of this post is MATS B: Baby/Children's Apparel which is the second assignment in the MATS B course and is a natural continuation of my last post (click here to read that if you missed it) and I will get to that, but first I can't wait to tell you what happened.

In April I was approached by the creator/editor of the online artist magazine MAEZA to contribute some of my work to their May issue with the theme of either Savannah or Purple. I decided to create two new pieces, one for each theme (click here to see that issue and my resulting work). It was an honour to be included in the project and to be a part of something with so many other talented and skilled artists! It's a sweet art magazine with a relatively small following at the moment but the issue went off successfully and I even got a few new followers out of the deal :)

Anyway, last week I got a message from the creator/editor requesting another contribution to their upcoming August issue!! I am beyond honoured to say the least! The theme this month is superstition and I've been busy collecting inspiration and designing a piece that I will be painting traditionally in watercolour - I'm even including some hand lettering :) I'm so excited!!

Okay, now that I've gotten that out I think I can get back to business. Thank you for being patient, on to MATS B: Baby/Children's Apparel!

As I said in my last post MATS B subjects include paper, baby/children's apparel & decor, scrapbooking, editorial, and party paper. Basically, for baby/children's apparel the assignment is to create a textile design suitable for baby/children's clothing. After having a few of these assignments under my belt I felt that I understood what was required. Basically I needed to create a bunch of icons that follow the theme. I was also to create three co-ordinate patterns to have a collection to submit to potential companies for licensing (which is really the whole point of the entire course collection).

but I wasn't feeling it so I branched out a bit.

I had never done anything like this before. There was a lot to learn about colour, pattern, repeats, trends, the list goes on and on, but I really enjoyed it! Maybe it's because it wasn't that long ago I was buying this type of clothing for my girls that I was so motivated to do a good job on this project. I spent a lot of time on the finishes and final arrangement with input from other MATS students (many with way more experience than I had), as well as my sister who runs a successful business creating children's apparel and has her finger on the pulse of what parents are looking for.

It took me more than a month to finish this one, but I really wanted something good enough to actually make fabric from. I'm still thinking about putting it up on Spoonflower for sale. This project ignited an interest in textile design for me. I love how you can take some images you've created and have them put on fabric for people to wear! I think it's at least as cool, if not cooler, than having your art up on a wall in someone's house!

Since this assignment I have watched a lot of videos on how to do textile design professionally and I've learned a lot. I don't think I'll ever be a full time Textile Designer, but I will definitely dip my toe in now and again :)

That's all I have to say for this week's post. There might be a deviation from the MATS series next week because I'm currently working on my submission for the third installment: Scrapbooking and with the MAEZA deadline looming I'm not sure I will have it finished before next Monday. I've still got lots to share with you though so stay tuned for next weeks post!

My Experience with Make Art That Sells

Hello again!!

For the Americans that read this, today is Independence Day, so Happy 4th of July to you!! For the Canadians, Canada Day just passed and I hope you had a good one! Yay Canada!!

As promised I'd like to tell you about my experience last November when I enrolled in the (last) live course for MATS A. First let me tell you a little about Make Art That Sells. No, I am not an affiliate and I do not get any reimbursement for my opinions, so you can relax knowing that what is written here is completely my own thoughts.

So, MATS is an online set of courses that are designed to help those that aspire to make money from their art through product licensing. Lilla Rogers (an artist in her own right and art agent) designs and runs each course and in the live programs offers weekly reviews of select student works. Each course runs about 4-5 weeks, with a new project each week so they are pretty intense! Lilla starts you out with a mini exercise to help get your juices flowing and then you have about 4 days to finish the assignment if you want your piece in the pool to be selected for her live review. For the review, she generally selects pieces that will best help her offer tips/advice for the whole group. There are also self-paced courses for those that would prefer to take their time - there's no live review in the self-paced courses.

As of this post there are 5 courses available on the MATS site, including her annual Global Talent Search where she selects one artist for her agency to represent. MATS A is a portfolio building course and covers 5 topics: bolt fabric, home decor, children's books, wall art, and gift. If you'd like to visit the site, click here. The cost for the courses is fairly steep at £259 or $344 US, but you get a LOT of information including insider tips on how to break into the industry and interviews with leading experts.

I came upon this course through one of my Facebook groups for Illustrators and thought it sounded like exactly the push I needed to grow my skills and understanding for what it takes to be a professional Illustrator. I have to say that I was not disappointed. The energy level is very high for 5 weeks straight, and if you work slowly there is no break for you to catch your breath. By the time the course was done I was exhausted! Here's what I created for each assignment:

Bolt Fabric:

My design for Bolt Fabric. The topic was Vintage Pyrex and pasta.

The bolt fabric assignment was my first ever exposure to the creative world of textile design. I have to admit that even with Lilla's instruction I was completely clueless!! We were to design a fabric with vintage pyrex casserole dishes and pasta (using a dark background if possible), as well as a minimum of 2 co-ordinates. For fun I decided to use gouache for this piece. I drew and painted each element then scanned them into my software and cut out to arrange the final design in Photoshop.

Home Decor:

My design for Home Decor. The topic was Staffordshire Pottery on a plate/dish.

This second assignment was not my favourite. We were to create a design in the style of Staffordshire pottery. I don't know if you've seen any of the Staffordshire figures, but they are not the most appealing characters, even if they do have interesting political stories behind them (google it for interest if you've never heard of it before, it's worth the read). This time I did stick to watercolour, and again I mostly worked on each element traditionally, then scanned, cut out and arranged the design in Photoshop which I then put on a plate mockup with a mask and background added.

Children's Books:

My design for Children's Books. The topic was a cover for the story The White Cat.

The Children's Book assignment was the one I was looking forward to the most. The story is about a princess that is turned into a beautiful white cat. She's visited by a young prince looking to prove to his father that he can be king. The cat helps him to solve each of the King's ridiculous quests through fantastic and magical gifts (the nuts are important for each gift). You can find the story easily on Google to read, it's a very old tale. Again, I worked in watercolour (you can see some of the paper texture), though for the cat's veil I did introduce some coloured pencil for a lacy effect. Then I scanned and arranged in Photoshop.

Wall Art:

My design for Wall Art. The topic was an abstract flower using the colours green and yellow with some lettering.

My least favourite topic was Wall Art. I have never done an abstract painting before, and we were to incorporate geometric shapes and stick to the colour palette. I actually had to design this out before I even tried painting it. I cut out squares and rectangles out of card stock, overly simplified the flowers, and added lots of texture with brush strokes and bubble wrap. The entire piece is 24x24 inches on canvas using acrylic paint. Talk about stepping out of my comfort zone! I have never done anything like it before. I actually really like how it turned out and I love the colours and textures :)

Gift:

My design for Gift. The topic was to create a zippered pouch with hyper lush art, using your own collections.

I had a hard time with this assignment because I don't actually have many collections, so I reached out to the internet for inspiration. I was mostly thinking about vintage because Lilla suggests it in almost everything she talks about, so I looked for a vintage colour palette and then searched for images of antique keys and vintage buttons. I came back to gouache for this one, but again drew and painted each element which was then scanned and arranged in Photoshop. The final image was masked over a mockup of a zippered pouch and the background elements were created by me as well.

There were quite a few times during this course that I felt intimidated, worthless, and talentless, but Lilla is very encouraging and so is the Facebook group of live people taking the course with you that you can get suggestions from for each piece. In my group there were a lot of people with way more experience than me, both as illustrators and working with software, many of whom had been trying to break into the market for awhile and it showed. 

I got a lot out of this course. When it was over my brain felt like it had been squeezed like a sponge and when it finally settled down I knew I would never think the same way again. I learned so much about so many things that I can't even describe it. I think you can see a definite progression of improvement in my work as the weeks went by as well.
